U.S. Cardinals Invited to White House for April 28 Meeting with Karl Rove

Immigration is Focus of Hour-Long Discussion

Karl Rove met this morning for an hour with three Catholic cardinals and the president of The Catholic University of America after the Church leaders were invited to the White House in connection with their gathering in the nation's capital for the 17th annual American Cardinals Dinner, a scholarship fundraiser for CUA.

The cardinals included Cardinal William H. Keeler, archbishop of Baltimore, Cardinal Roger Mahony, archbishop of Los Angeles, and Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, archbishop of Washington and CUA chancellor. Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., president of The Catholic University of America, also participated in the meeting with the White House deputy chief of staff.

The focus of the meeting was immigration. Rove presented the Bush administration's position on immigration reform and the cardinals shared the Catholic Church's position and response to the needs of immigrants.

The three cardinals and the president of the university are due to join four other residential archbishops - Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York, Cardinal Seán Patrick O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap., archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Justin F. Rigali of Philadelphia, and Cardinal Adam J. Maida of Detroit - in addition to the theologian Cardinal Avery Dulles, S.J. - to celebrate a 3:30 p.m. public Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, prior to the Cardinals Dinner.

The dinner will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, located at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. Each year a different archdiocese hosts the 7 p.m. black-tie dinner; this will be the first time since 1994 that the U.S. cardinals have gathered in Washington for the scholarship fundraiser. The event has raised more than $20 million to support scholarship funds at Catholic University.
