CUA Custodial Employees Ratify Contract

Catholic University's custodial employees have ratified a collective bargaining agreement that was finalized on July 10, 2006, by representatives of Catholic University and the Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ. The three-year contract provides for $1/hr wage increases for all of the 96 employees represented by SEIU in the current year and in each of the two years that follow. The contract raises the pay range to $9.34-$11.33/hr.

In addition to the pay raise, the new agreement lowers the cost of one of the health insurance options. Employees covered by the agreement may now enroll for individual coverage in the HMO plan offered by the university for a premium of $100/month. Previously, the cost of the premium was $157/month.

"I am very pleased by the terms of this agreement," said Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., president of Catholic University. "In 2003 the university conducted a staff compensation study and, aware of our own institutional budgetary constraints, re-committed itself to paying its employees a just wage and raising salary levels that were lagging behind market rates. The pay rates in this agreement reflect that commitment and the reduction in health care premiums for those employees most in need of low-cost health insurance is consistent with our Catholic philosophy of social justice," said Father O'Connell.
