CUA Faculty Member Receives Fulbright Scholar Award

Daniel Saalfeld, a lecturer in the English department and Metropolitan College at The Catholic University of America, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture on modern and contemporary American poetry and poetry writing at Volgograd State University in Volgograd, Russia, during the 2006-2007 academic year.

Since 1997 Saalfeld has taught Catholic University courses in poetry-writing, literature and English as a second language. He says those experiences - including the teaching of international students - will prove helpful in Russia, as will his own experience as a poet whose work has been published in several literary journals.

At Volgograd State University, he will be teaching students majoring in American studies. The city of Volgograd, which was named Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961, has a population of about a million people and is located between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, west of the Ural Mountains.

Saalfeld is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 150 countries for the 2006-2007 academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program, including 30 who will be traveling to Russia. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.

Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
