Film/Lecture: "The 'Reel' Maid of Orleans: The Film Lives of Joan of Arc," by Kevin J. Harty, chair of the English Department at La Salle University

4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 17, 2006

Herzfeld Auditorium
The Catholic University of America
620 Michigan Ave. N.E.
Washington, D.C.

Kevin Harty's talk will include excerpts from 100 years of cinematic productions celebrating the life and legacy of Joan of Arc, including some early and very rare films. His remarks will be supplemented by clips from the following films: The Execution of Joan of Arc (1898), The Joan of Arc of Loos (1916), Joan the Maid (1935), Joan of Paris (1942), Joan of Arc (1948), The Little Drummer Girl (1984), Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989), and The Messenger (1999).

This film-illustrated lecture is offered in conjunction with a series of Joan of Arc-related events and exhibits around Washington, D.C., including an exhibition of more than 200 Joan of Arc paintings, prints and sculptures co-curated by Nora Heimann, a professor of art history at CUA. (The exhibition will open Nov. 18 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, where Harty also will speak in early December.)

Harty is an internationally recognized authority on cinematic depictions of the Middle Ages, especially films about Robin Hood, King Arthur and Joan of Arc. He has written several books on Arthurian films and is presently working on one about Joan of Arc in film.

The CUA lecture is free and open to the public and includes a reception with light refreshments. For more information, contact Joan Grimbert at 202-319-5240.
