CUA Hosts Variety of Summer 2007 Events

Even though most full-time students are home for the summer, The Catholic University of America is far from deserted. In addition to the more than 1,700 students enrolled in the university's summer sessions programs, more than 5,000 visitors are expected on campus for a variety of conferences and events over the next couple of months.

One of the largest groups to visit will be Lead America, a youth leadership organization. Lead America conferences in areas of study ranging from politics to national security to law will be held on the campus in numerous sessions between June and early August. Around 1,000 middle school and high school students are expected to attend the conferences.

On June 29 the National Pastoral Life Center will hold its Catholic Common Ground Initiative on the CUA campus. Author and lecturer Jill Ker Conway will deliver the Philip J. Murnion Lecture and Rev. James Bacik, pastor of the Corpus Christi University Parish at the University of Toledo in Ohio, will deliver a response. The event is free and open to the public.

The District of Columbia Office of Youth Programs will host the Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute from July 6 to 13. The program will bring nearly 100 D.C. youths to the campus to train them in leadership and self-development.

The athletics department will host several sports camps. The second session of the 15th Annual Catholic University Boys and Girls Basketball Camp will be held June 25 to 29. Baseball coach Ross Natoli will conduct his 20th Annual Summer Instructional Baseball Camp from July 9-13. From July 15 to 18, women's field hockey coach Gia Cillizza will direct about 75 athletes in the Revolution field hockey camp.

Students interning in the area with various non-profit organizations will be housed on the campus for the summer as well. Earlier this month, several Girl Scout troops stayed at CUA while in the capital to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the organization.
