3 New Alumnae Bike Across U.S. for American Lung Association

Three 2008 CUA graduates are on a cross-country bicycle ride to raise money for the American Lung Association.

On June 23, Rachel Bailey, Catie Picou and Letty Williams left Seattle to begin their "Big Ride Across America" journey for the American Lung Association that will end 3,300 miles later in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 9.

To register for the race, the women had to raise $5,500, which will be used to support research for diseases such as lung cancer, emphysema and asthma. They collected the money by hosting happy hours and turning to friends and family for donations.

Both Picou and Williams are maintaining blogs related to their experience.

The CUA alumnae trained for the grueling ride. Both Picou and Williams noted in their blogs that they had spent days riding several miles along bike paths around Washington.

Although the ride is sometimes physically difficult, it comes with the added bonus of exploring new places.

"In the past few days I've seen mountains, hills, plains, farmland, desert, rock formations and forests. I have spent miles riding along the Columbia River, hearing the gentle roll of the cool water, and I have spent miles seeing nothing but desert brush," Picou noted in her blog.
