Catholic University Celebrates Christmas with Tree Lighting, Concerts

The Catholic University of America is preparing for the holidays in many ways, including its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, which this year will be held in the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center. Other events include several concerts by the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music and opportunities for prayer and reflection sponsored by Campus Ministry. The Christmas events are:

  • Saturday, Dec. 1, 8 p.m. The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music Women's Chorus Christmas Concert. St. Vincent's Chapel. For more information, call 202-841-5414.

  • Sunday, Dec. 2, to Tuesday, Dec. 25. Campus Ministry will post student-written Advent Reflections daily during Advent at

  • Sunday, Dec. 2, 4 p.m. The Town and Gown Singers present a Musique de Noël concert. The program will include a performance of Camille Saint-Saëns' Christmas Oratorio, Hector Berlioz's The Shepherd's Farewell and traditional carols for Advent and Christmas.   • Monday, Dec. 3, to Friday, Dec. 14. Advent Adoration will take place in Caldwell Chapel following the 12:15 p.m. Mass on Mondays and Tuesdays until 8 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays until 10 p.m., and Fridays until 5 p.m. For more information, call 202-319-5575.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 4, 9 p.m., Lessons and Carols sponsored by Campus Ministry. Caldwell Chapel.

  • Monday, Dec. 3, to Monday, Dec. 10. CUA Giving Tree. Help children in the Brookland community by purchasing Christmas gifts for them. View the wish list at or pick an ornament on a Christmas tree in the Pryzbyla Center. All gifts can be brought to the Pryzbyla Center on Friday, Dec. 7, or to the Campus Ministry Office by Monday, Dec. 10. Campus Ministry will provide shuttles to Target so students can purchase gifts on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. For more information, call 202-319-5575.

  • Friday, Dec. 7, 5 p.m. "Light the Season," CUA's Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Pryzbyla Center, Third-Floor Atrium (across from Starbucks). The celebration will include refreshments, music and a visit from Santa Claus. CUA Christmas ornaments will be distributed.   • Friday, Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m. 19th Annual Christmas Concert for Charity presented by the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The musicians will present a concert of carols and Christmas selections spanning several centuries that will include works by Bach, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Villa-Lobos and Vaughan Williams. Catholic University's portion of the evening will open with the premiere performance of "Hodie Nobis de Caelo" by Jason Lovelace, a CUA doctoral candidate in music. This year's concert will benefit Providence Hospital's Perry Family Health Center. The concert will be held at the Basilica, Upper Church. For more information, call 202-319-5414.

  • Sunday, Dec. 9, 7 p.m. The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music Chamber Choir Christmas Concert. Part of its "CUA in the City" series.   • Saturday, Dec. 15, 8:30 a.m. Wreath-Laying at Arlington National Cemetery by The Catholic University of America Alumni Association.

    CUA has been assigned to Section 33. Only limited parking will be available in the Employees and Administration Building parking lots off King Drive so Metrorail is encouraged (Arlington Cemetery Station on the Blue Line). Section 33 is only a very short walk from the station.
