CUA President Addresses the Knights of Malta in NYC

Very Reverend David M. O'Connell, C.M., university president, addressed the American Association of the Knights of Malta at their annual meeting in New York City on Saturday, Nov. 15. The meeting was held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Several hundred Knights and Dames of Malta from around the country gathered for the talk, following a Mass celebrated by Father O'Connell. His topic was "The State of Catholic Education in the United States Today."

"I was delighted to accept this invitation from Dr. Joseph Metz, alumnus of CUA and Knight Hospitaller and member of the order's Board of Councillors," remarked Father O'Connell. "Given my responsibilities as president of the national university of the Catholic Church in our country, I feel a special obligation to celebrate Catholic education and its contributions to American society whenever I can."

Focusing upon Catholic higher education in particular, Father O'Connell addressed the view advanced by Pope Benedict XVI on the CUA campus last April, that "Catholic education is integral to the mission of the Church" and one of the best means "to encounter the Lord Jesus."
