Four CUA Scholarly Journals Rate Among Best Internationally

The Catholic Biblical Quarterly and The Catholic Historical Review
Professors seldom get graded. But in July four scholarly journals edited by faculty at The Catholic University of America were "graded" as being among the world's top peer-reviewed academic journals by the European Science Foundation.

Two of the CUA-edited journals - The Catholic Biblical Quarterly and The Catholic Historical Review - received an "A" ranking, putting them in the top 10 to 25 percent of journals covering the discipline of religious studies and theology. The "A" designation is given to "high-ranking international publications with a very strong reputation among researchers of the field in different countries, regularly cited all over the world," according to the foundation.

Two other CUA-edited journals - Bulletin of Medieval Canon Law and The Review of Metaphysics - were grouped in the "B" category of journals in the disciplines of history and philosophy, respectively. Journals in the "B" category are defined as "standard international publications with a good reputation among researchers of the field in different countries."

All four of the ranked CUA-edited journals were judged to be international in stature because of their worldwide cohort of contributors and readers, consistently high-quality scholarly content, and the broad consensus of scholars that affirm the journals' international status and visibility.

Panels of European scholars ranked hundreds of scholarly journals addressing 15 disciplines of the humanities. The project "aims initially to identify and gain more visibility for top-quality European humanities research published in academic journals," says the foundation.

"This is a serious scholarly effort to assess scholarly journals," says David McGonagle, director of The Catholic University of America Press. "It provides evidence of the quality of scholarship carried out at CUA."
