CUA President Appoints New Dean of Canon Law School

Rev. Robert. J. Kaslyn, S.J.

The president of The Catholic University of America, Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., announced today that he has appointed Rev. Robert. J. Kaslyn, S.J., dean of the School of Canon Law, effective May 1, 2009.

A member of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Father Kaslyn is a tenured, associate professor in the School of Canon Law. He was first appointed to the university faculty in 2001.

Father Kaslyn received his doctorate in canon law (J.C.D.) in 1993 from St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada. He also possesses a licentiate in sacred theology (S.T.L.) from the Toronto School of Theology.

In addition to his teaching, research, writing and scholarship on various aspects of the Church's law, Father Kaslyn has served as a tribunal judge and as an adviser to various organizations, dioceses and institutes of consecrated life in the United States.

"I am very pleased to make this appointment and I do so with the full confidence of many people I consulted," observed the university's president. "Father Kaslyn is a serious scholar and effective teacher and has demonstrated a love for the Church and its legal structures in service to the people of God. With the unanimous support of the faculty of canon law, Father Kaslyn has, in my judgment, the competence and ability to lead the school effectively and to serve the Church in our country with wisdom and pastoral charity."

"I am grateful to Father O'Connell for entrusting me with the deanship of the School of Canon Law," said Father Kaslyn. "I know that I can count on his assistance as well as that of my fellow faculty in the school, experts both in the law and in canonical praxis. Together, we aim to serve the Church here in the United States and abroad in the important ministry of canon law and especially serve the bishops in their responsibility of shepherding the people of God," noted Father Kaslyn.

Father O'Connell added, "This occasion also provides me with the opportunity to express an enormous debt of gratitude to Sister Rose McDermott, S.S.J., who has served for the past two years as dean of the School of Canon Law. She has been both extraordinary and exemplary in her generosity to and love for The Catholic University of America. We join her religious community, the Sisters of St. Joseph, in thanking God for her marvelous witness to joyful service of the Church, especially to its members in consecrated life."
