More than 1,000 solar panels will be installed on four campus buildings within the next three weeks, creating Washington, D.C.’s largest solar-energy system.
Beginning Nov. 11, 3-by-6-foot solar panels will be installed by Standard Solar Inc. of Gaithersburg, Md., on the rooftops of the university’s athletic center, the Raymond A. DuFour Center; an academic building, Aquinas Hall, and two student residences, Flather and Gibbons halls.
“Two cranes are lifting 1,088 solar panels and other material to rooftops across campus,” said Brian Alexander, director of energy and utilities management at CUA. “By the end of November, 30,233 square feet of solar panels will be installed and ready to produce electricity for the buildings where they reside.”
CUA has signed a multi-year agreement to purchase electricity generated by the system at guaranteed rates from Washington Gas Energy Services. In terms of electricity produced, the system will be the largest in the metropolitan Washington area.
