CUA Archives Launches Online Finding Aids for Collections

John Mitchell
(CUA Archives)

The Catholic University of America Archives has created online inventories for three different archive collections.

A finding aid for more than 700 photographs from the First Vatican Council has been posted. The collection contains photos of Vatican Council I, held at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome between December 1869 and September 1870. A digital version of the photos can be found by clicking here. The photos were donated to CUA by St. Paul's College (Lawrenceville, Va.) in January 2005.

Another finding aid has been created for the papers of John Mitchell, a labor leader and president of the United Mine Workers of America from 1898 to 1909. The collection contains Mitchell's correspondence, printed materials and photographs. A digital collection of the photographs can be found here. Mitchell's papers were donated to the university over several years by his children and former secretary.

The third finding aid complements the collection of papers from Monsignor Peter Guilday, a professor of church history at CUA from 1914 to 1941, and founder and former editor of the Catholic Historical Review. Monsignor Guilday had stored his papers in a campus vault in 1945. The papers were transferred to the university Archives when it was established in 1949.
