President's Message on the Passing of Professor Emeritus of Chemistry

Ying Nan Chiu

It is with sadness that we mark the passing of one of our colleagues, Professor Ying Nan Chiu, professor emeritus in the Department of Chemistry of the School of Arts and Sciences, on July 18, 2009.

Professor Chiu received his M.S. degree in organic chemistry and his doctorate in physical chemistry in 1960 from Yale University. Four years later, Professor Chiu joined the Department of Chemistry of The Catholic University of America, where he taught and pursued his research for more than 40 years. Prior to his appointment to CUA, Professor Chiu was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University (1960-62) and a research associate at the University of Chicago (1962-64).

Professor Chiu was well-known for his work in the fields of theoretical chemistry and the interrelationship between physics, chemistry and mathematics. He amassed a substantial publication record and was the recipient of numerous honors here in the United States and in China. In 1995, Pope John Paul II honored him with the Benemerenti Medal.

Professor Chiu was a frequent visitor to my office in Nugent Hall in the early years of my service as president. He often brought me manuscripts, articles and souvenirs of his travels. I remember so well an occasion where I was entertaining guests of the university, only to suddenly find Professor Chiu in their midst. He had come to visit and slipped by the watchful eye of my secretary. Always kind and full of enthusiasm for his research, Professor Chiu expressed great pride in his service at CUA.

He leaves behind a loving wife and two sons. A brief memorial service will be held at the Japanese Tea House of Brookside Gardens, Wheaton, Md.,on Aug. 8, 2009 at noon. Directions are found: http://www.montgomeryparks.org/brookside/

Working on his rock gardens was one of Professor Chiu's favorite pastimes and he visited Brookside regularly for almost 40 years. In lieu of flowers, well-wishers may make charitable donations to the Gardens in memory of Ying Nan Chiu, payable to Brookside Gardens, Attn. Stephanie Oberle: Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton, MD 20902.
