Theology Professor and His Wife Appointed to Pontifical Council for the Family

John and Claire Grabowski

John Grabowski, associate professor of moral theology and ethics in the School of Theology and Religious Studies, and his wife, Claire, have been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to the Pontifical Council for the Family.

The council is responsible for the promotion of the pastoral ministry and apostolate to the family. It coordinates efforts related to the promotion of responsible procreation and initiatives in defense of human life at all stages. The Grabowskis will be one of 19 married couples on the council.

Grabowski has published several articles in the areas of bioethics, moral theology, marriage and sexuality. Since 2005 he has been a theological adviser to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Subcommittee on Marriage and Family.

"The Catholic University of America is honored once more that the Holy See has chosen someone from among its ranks for service to the Church," says Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., university president.

"Professor Grabowski is an excellent theologian and he and his wife, Claire, will make a great contribution to the Church's Pontifical Council for the Family."

Five other members of the CUA community serve the Vatican as consultors. Father O'Connell is a consultor for the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education. Sister Rose McDermott, S.S.J., associate professor of canon law, serves as an adviser to the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Faith. Monsignor Paul McPartlan, Carl J. Peter Professor of Systematic Theology and Ecumenism, is a consultor to the International Theological Commission.

Nelson Minnich, professor of church history, and Monsignor Robert Trisco, professor emeritus of theology and religious studies, both serve as consultors on the Pontifical Committee of Historical Sciences.
