2009 International George Bernard Shaw Conference

The Catholic University of America, the International Shaw Society and the Washington Stage Guild this fall will present the 2009 International Shaw Conference. From Thursday, Oct. 15, to Sunday, Oct. 18, the university's Department of Drama will host George Bernard Shaw scholars from all over the world for a meeting with a theme aptly chosen for the nation's capital - Shaw & Politics.

The conference will open with a reception on Thursday night at the Irish Embassy, located at 2234 Massachusetts Ave., N.W. On Friday morning at CUA's Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center, the keynote speaker will be Jackie Maxwell, artistic director of the annual Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Performances during the conference will include the Washington Stage Guild's productions of Shaw's "Press Cuttings" and "Augustus Does His Bit" in the university's Callan Theatre, and the CUA drama department's production of Shaw's "In Good King Charles's Golden Days" at the university's Hartke Theatre. A variety of papers and panel discussions will be presented on Friday and Saturday at the Pryzbyla Center.

At the same time as the conference, CUA's Department of Drama will offer a number of other Shaw-related lectures and readings that will be free and open to the public.
