In January 2007, the District of Columbia Zoning Board approved CUA’s plan to build a 400-bed residence hall on the eastern edge of the university’s main campus. As CUA Magazine went to press, a groundbreaking was scheduled to take place on March 12. Details to come in the summer issue.

Co-hosted this year by Bishop of Las Vegas Joseph Pepe and with most of America’s cardinals scheduled to be in attendance, the gala dinner raises funds for academically qualified Catholic University students who are in need of financial support. President's Society at CUAThanks From the Troops

CUA seniors who serve Catholic University’s president as members of the President’s Society hold a folded American flag they received from the 386th Expeditionary Communications Squadron in Kuwait and Iraq. Sent to CUA at Christmas, the flag and an accompanying citation express the American squadron’s thanks to the students for sending many personal letters and care packages that included toiletries, games, magazines and candy. Front and center in the photo below is Elizabeth Hudson, an art major from Annapolis, Md., who headed up the service project.

The Academy Award-winning actor Jon Voight, B.A. 1960, was an art major at CUA when he painted this Cardinal logo on the hardwood of the basketball court in the university’s old gymnasium. That gymnasium was transformed into the Edward M. Crough Center for Architectural Studies in 1985. Cut out of the gym floor and preserved, the actor’s cardinal achievement has since September 2006 been displayed on the first floor of the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center.

CUA students and staff at Lemon G. Hine Junior High SchoolIn Honor of a King

To commemorate Martin Luther King Day, 26 CUA students and four CUA staff members joined in a service project to clean and beautify Lemon G. Hine Junior High School in Southeast D.C. Working alongside other Washingtonians in a project sponsored by Greater D.C. Cares, they cleaned a stairwell, scraped off cracked paint and repainted several parts of the school.

Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., and Valdas AdamkusTwo Presidents and a Pope

Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., president of Catholic University, accompanies the president of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, on a tour of Washington, D.C.’s Pope John Paul II Cultural Center on Feb. 11. Their relationship goes back to 1998 when Father O’Connell conferred an honorary CUA degree on Adamkus.
