Rev. John J. Abrahams, B.A. 1962 (A&S), presented his collection of digital paintings titled “The Cecil Years” at West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Md. His fascination with photography began at age 12 as he was rummaging through his grandmother’s old snapshots, and taking pictures has continued to be a passion ever since. The images displayed at the academy were created with a Canon digital camera and processed through Photoshop software. Father Abrahams continues to serve at Prince of Peace Church in Edgewood, Md.
Robert J. Garofalo, M.A. 1963, Ph.D. 1969 (MUSIC), professor emeritus in CUA’s Benjamin T. Rome School of Music, of Silver Spring, Md., edited the book Folk Songs & Dances in Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger. This is Volume 4 in the book series Folk Songs & Dances in Wind Band Classics, of which Garofalo is the editor. The new book includes sheet music for singing, a CD recording of the songs, and historical and interpretive notes. Garofalo is the president of Whirlwind Music Publications, which published the book.
Marcia Petrini, B.S.N. 1963 (NURS), the dean of Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing in China, has been awarded the Friendship Award, China’s highest honor given to foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s economic and social progress. She began working in China in 1988 as a country director for Project HOPE, an international health education and humanitarian assistance organization. In 2003, she was named the dean of the nursing school. She helped lead the curriculum reform of the nursing school’s baccalaureate program and initiated master’s and Ph.D. programs.
William A. Lester, Ph.D. 1964 (A&S), was honored with a Festschrift in the pages of The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, volume 112, Issue 10, March 13, 2008. He is a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.
James T. (Casey) Hynes, B.A. 1965 (A&S), was recently elected to be a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) director of research at the École Normale Supérieure, Paris, France. His theoretical chemistry research was also honored with a Festschrift in a January 2008 special issue of The Journal of Physical Chemistry B.
