Living Abroad
CUA Magazine Fall 2008
I must congratulate you on your excellent publication. I was particularly interested in the reports from the CUA alumni serving overseas [in the Fall 2008 issue].

During my 23 years with the CIA, I was privileged to have served in Europe (Paris) and the Far East (Taiwan). Two of my nine children were born overseas and we lived among the natives rather than in government quarters, thereby absorbing the local charms.

Simple Gratitude, With Prayer
Westminster Abbey in British Columbia
Westminster Abbey in British Columbia
The new issue of CUA Magazine has just come. It always brings joy and good memories. But I have never thanked you.

Raised a farm boy in Oregon, I became a priest monk of Mount Angel Abbey in that state and then volunteered to be part of the new foundation of Westminster Abbey in Canada in 1948. In the fall of 1966 I was sent to CUA to pursue an M.A. in English, finishing in January 1968. While a student, I stayed at St. Anselm’s Abbey in Washington, D.C.

After 43 years my memories of CUA are still fresh and full of gratitude. I am a simple monk/librarian. I have simple gratitude to recompense you, with prayer.

Helping Build Her Alma Mater
Opus Hall
I am a CUA alum (B.S.Arch. 1983) and my firm was actually the design architect for CUA’s new residence hall, Opus Hall. (We also designed the renovated Keane/ McGivney Hall, which was completed last year.) As my first project on the campus of my alma mater, Opus Hall was an extremely important one for me. I was very proud to be back in the place where I began my education and that I recall with such fond memories. To be able to make a lasting impression on the culture of the place that is so special to me is very rewarding.
