• A Great Recommendation
Years ago I attended a lecture by Jude Dougherty, then the dean of CUA’s School of Philosophy, at the 100th anniversary of that school.

Afterward Dean Dougherty took questions from the floor, and someone asked, in essence, do you really think you’re doing any good?

His reply was patient. He said he believed that a thousand years from now people will still be reading Aristotle, and, moreover, that a thousand years from now people will still be reading Aquinas on Aristotle. He said that he and his colleagues try to do their best.

After a brief pause, he added, “And Ratzinger recommends us.”

At the time it was just a Catholic, curial in-joke, but now it’s even more of a point of pride, having a good word for one’s school from Pope Benedict XVI.

• Kudos
Your magazine, in my opinion, is the very best it has ever been and I congratulate those who produce it. I really liked your new feature — “My Favorite Teacher” — and the artwork that went with it.

• CUA Family Extraordinaire
My family is an example of how commitment to Catholic University extends over time and generations. My mother, Mary Ann, and I are both instructors at CUA, and my father, Mickey, was an associate professor before retiring last year. He is now teaching voice in his home studio after more than 40 years in the school of music. Years ago my mother taught in the departments of English, adult-ed and drama; for the past three years she has been teaching Stage Movement for Singers in the school of music. As for me, I am in my seventh year of teaching Intermediate Accounting in the Department of Business and Economics.

On top of that, we are all graduates of CUA, holding seven CUA degrees among us, spanning how many years I do not know. (That’s not counting my sister, Moira, who also has a CUA degree, in nursing.) I suppose you get many letters about how CUA is such a family affair.

• Boxing Memories
The article “Eddie’s Boys: Remembering the Heyday of Collegiate Boxing” [in the Spring 2005 issue] is a gem. Flows beautifully. I especially like the story of the three-knockout bout. It even caught my boxing-historian friends by surprise. Keep up the great work.

I was a special student at CUA during the school year 1947–1948 (thanks to the GI Bill). I was present at the boxing match that resulted in the death of one of the combatants. A sickening pall descended upon all who were there.

Robert Sprouse’s artwork [for the “My Favorite Teacher” cover story of the Spring 2005 issue] is outstanding.

• Editor's Note
Gene Ford, B.A. 1951, who wrote the alumni essay about fine wines in the Spring 2005 issue of CUA Magazine, passed away on June 10 at the age of 77. His last book, The Science of Healthy Drinking, received an international award as Best Wine Literature Book of 2003. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Patricia (Gorman), who attended Catholic University with Gene.
