Two Freshman Debaters Win National Championship

On March 11, freshmen Joseph McBurney and Anna McCrerey won the Cross Examination Debate Association Novice National Debate Championships, held at Towson University in Towson, Md.

Following two days of preliminary competition, Mr. McBurney and Ms. McCrerey had compiled a 6-1 record to advance to the final 32 teams.

On elimination day, they surpassed teams such as Cornell and Pepperdine to face California State University in the finals of the national championship. The judges were unanimous in awarding the national title to the two CUA Debate Team members.

The Cross Examination Debate Association comprises more than 250 colleges in the nation.

"We are very proud of our students," said Ron Bratt, Catholic University's director of debate. "Their hard work and determination paid off!"

The CUA Debate Team, currently ranked number 1 in the country by both the National Debate Tournament and the American Debate Association, will be at Clarion University in Pennsylvania on March 17-18, competing in the American Debate Association National Championships. Approximately 100 colleges belong to the ADA.
