CUA President Comments on Appointment of Archbishop McCarrick
The Very Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M., President of The Catholic University of America, expressed great enthusiasm today at the appointment by the Holy Father of The Most Reverend Theodore E. McCarrick, current Archbishop of Newark, as Archbishop of Washington, D.C.
"Archbishop McCarrick, as a double alumnus of CUA, a former chaplain, faculty member and administrator at CUA, and a current member of its Board of Trustees, has long been a part of our University community. He has an extensive and distinguished career in Catholic higher education and as a leader in service to the Church, to the nation and to the world. His appointment as Archbishop of Washington also designates him as Chancellor of The Catholic University of America, representing the university’s interests to the Holy See. Archbishop McCarrick understands well the challenges that face Catholic universities and colleges today. His incredibly rich background in so many areas of endeavor will be of tremendous benefit to the people of the Church of Washington and to all the citizens of the District. The Catholic University of America is very proud of this accomplished alumnus and I am personally delighted to welcome him to yet another role at alma mater."
Archbishop McCarrick received an M.A. degree in Social Sciences from The Catholic University of America in 1960 and a Ph.D. in Sociology from CUA in 1963. He subsequently served the university as its assistant chaplain, dean of students and director of development.
