Cardinals Host Tournament and Championship Play This Weekend

The Cardinals will have a busy weekend, as the CUA women’s volleyball team hosts and plays in their conference championship game and the top-seeded women’s field hockey team hosts a tournament with the other top-seeded teams in their division.

The Cardinals field hockey team on Monday was picked as the top seed in the mid-Atlantic region of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

During the regular season, the Cardinals finished 15-3 – the best finish ever for the field hockey team in its 33-year history, said Athletic Director Robert J. Talbot. The team finished in third place in the Capital Athletic Conference.

“This is probably going to be the busiest athletics weekend we’ve had in a long time,” Talbot said. The Cardinals football team will battle Guilford College at 1 p.m. Saturday and the women’s volleyball team will play Mary Washington College at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Capital Athletic Conference championship. The CUA women’s volleyball team regular season record this year is 36-2.

This weekend, CUA also will host a field hockey tournament with other teams rounding out the top six of their division: Montclair State University (2); Western Maryland College (3); Washington College (4); Ithaca College (5) and Drew University (6).

On Wednesday, Drew upset Western Maryland in overtime, and Washington College defeated Ithaca. Drew will now play Montclair in the first semi-final game at 11 a.m. Saturday, while Washington College will take on the Cardinals in the other semi-final game at 2 p.m. The winners of those games will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday for the championship game.

Tickets for this weekend’s field hockey games are $4 for adults and $2 for students.
