Men’s Basketball Team Advances to CAC Finals

Cardinals to Face off Against Mary Washington College on Saturday, March 1

The No. 9-ranked CUA men’s basketball team will be playing for the championship in the 2003 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, after defeating Marymount University 58-56 on Thursday night.

The Cardinals again will have home court advantage when they face off against Mary Washington College on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. in the Raymond A. DuFour (athletic) Center. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division III championship tournament, due to begin March 7.

If the Cardinals, whose win-loss record is 24-3 and who are ranked No. 9 in the nation out of 400 Division III schools, are defeated in the CAC finals, they may still be invited to the NCAA tournament through an “at-large” bid, says Robert Talbot, CUA’s athletic director.

Under the watch of Coach Mike Lonergan, currently in his 11th year, CUA has appeared in seven NCAA tournaments, the past five in the “Sweet Sixteen.” The Cardinals won the NCAA Div. III National Championship title in 2001. On Feb. 19, CUA defeated York College of Pennsylvania, guaranteeing its sixth consecutive CAC title.

“We have a lot of experience and depth, and three seniors who are starters,” Lonergan says. “We have been struggling as of late but we are hoping to play better tomorrow and win another CAC Tournament Championship.”
