DETAILS: Irish
novelist and playwright Sebastian Barry
will read from his novel, “A Long Long Way,” which was short-listed for the 2005 Man Booker Prize
for Fiction, Britain’s most prestigious literary award. The novel about Irish
soldier Willie Dunne, who confronts the harsh realities of World War I and the
Irish struggle for independence, is a sequel to Barry’s award-winning 1995 play,
“The Steward
of Christendom.”
Praised as a “master storyteller”
by The Wall Street Journal, Barry also is the author of the novels “The
Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty” (1999) and “Annie Dunne” (2003); the poetry
collections “Fanny Hawke Goes to the
Mainland Forever” (1989) and “The
Water-Colourist” (1983); and a novel for children, “Elsewhere: the Adventures of Belemus” (1985).
Christina Mahony, director of CUA’s Center for Irish Studies, will introduce Barry. Mahony is the editor of “Out of History: Essays on the Writings of Sebastian Barry,” which will be published in April by CUA Press.
Barry also will sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase. The reading is free and open to the public.
