The tournament, part of a two-day competition series that includes the Division I all-girl national tournament and Division I and Division II/III coed tournaments, will be taped by ESPN and aired on a later date. Approximately 30 to 40 squads are expected to enter the preliminary round. Participating teams received tournament bids and national rankings by submitting video-entry tapes showcasing their cheering routines.
This is the first year the CUA team has been selected for the national tournament. “When I came in as a freshman, the team practiced twice a week, and now we practice six or seven times a week,” said Kimberly Pulick, a junior politics/pre-law major from Sound Beach, N.Y., and team captain. “We’re so excited. To be competing at the national level is just a dream.”
Coach Malone participated in the tournament series in 1990 as a member of George Mason University’s coed team, which that year won the Division I championship.
Interested parties can catch the CUA cheerleading team in action before they depart for Florida during the Jan. 8 CUA Pepsi Classic basketball tournament, as well as the Jan. 11 women’s and men’s home basketball games, held at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
