Film Debut of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia

 

Students Live in Housing Group Dedicated to Study of C.S. Lewis’ Works;

Can Discuss Impact of Children’s Book Series and Hopes for the Film Version

 

Student members of the Inklings, a Catholic University thematic housing group dedicated to studying the writings of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and other writers, are available to share their thoughts about the Friday, Dec. 9, opening of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”

 

The film is based on the book by C.S. Lewis, whose conversion to Christianity is reflected in his writing. Inklings group members, who live in the same residence hall as part of the university’s thematic housing program, have read and discussed the book and hold differing views about the film’s opening, according to sophomore Rachel Grabowski, the group’s student leader. Some members are “totally psyched” about the opening, says Grabowski, while others fear the movie may spoil their image of the book.

 

Members of the CUA undergraduate group will be going to see the movie on opening night.

 

The thematic housing group — one of several at CUA — is designed to foster community and to

enhance students’ educational experience. The group takes its name from the literary outfit

known as the Inklings, which included Lewis, Tolkien and others. The original Inklings met

weekly from 1939 to 1962 in the back room of what used to be the Bird and Baby pub on St.

Giles Street in Oxford, England. CUA’s Inklings are exploring the intellectual foundations of modern life through the writers’ works.
