The Catholic University of America Names New Dean of Columbus School of Law

May 1995

Brother Patrick Ellis, F.S.C., president of The Catholic University of America, has named Bernard Dobranski dean of the university's Columbus School of Law.

Currently dean at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Dobranski will join Catholic University Aug. 1. He succeeds Ralph Rohner, who will return to the Columbus School of Law faculty after more than eight years as dean.

Dobranski earned a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Notre Dame and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He served on the faculties of Creighton University and the University of Notre Dame law schools. He was named dean at the University of Detroit Mercy in 1983 and is credited with strengthening and transforming the university's law school.

In addition to his strong background in academic administration, Dobranski brings to Catholic University expertise in labor law, collective bargaining and arbitration. He was general counsel for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Commission, professional staff member of the Kerner Commission on civil disorders, legal adviser to a board member of the National Labor Relations Board, and administrative assistant to a U.S. congressman.

Founded in 1898, Catholic University's law school is accredited by the American Bar Association and Association of American Law Schools. More than 600 full-time and 250 part-time students are enrolled. The academic program also emphasizes commitment to values and service. Students are trained to be sensitive to matters of ethics and morality in their practice of law. Special programs are offered in communications law, comparative and international law, and law and public policy. Nine clinical programs provide education in real-life settings and serve deaf and indigent clients in housing, consumer and criminal matters, as well as assisting victims of family violence.
