CUA President Appoints Vincent P. Walter Vice President
Vincent P. Walter, who for 28 years has served in a variety of positions at The Catholic University of America, has been named a University Vice President by The Very Reverend David M. OConnell, C.M., the Universitys President. The action was taken in Rome on Sept. 28, 1999, during a retreat meeting of the Universitys Board of Trustees and announced by OConnell at the first meeting of the Universitys Administrative Council Oct. 12, 1999.
Already a member of the Presidents Council, Walter will retain the same responsibilities in the area of executive services, with the addition of a number of special projects. He will continue to serve as the Secretary of the Board of Trustees and the Secretary of the Corporation under the title of Vice President and General Secretary.
"Vincent Walter has earned a well-deserved reputation within the University and among its various constituents as a respected and experienced administrator," said OConnell. "He has a deep understanding of the mission and priorities of The Catholic University of America, backed up by long institutional memory. I have worked closely with him and am pleased to recognize his efforts on behalf of the University in this way."
Walter graduated from Catholic University in 1960, earned a masters degree in 1973 and taught in the public schools of Maryland for some years before being named Executive Director of a national teachers professional association. He returned to the University in 1972 as national Alumni Director and moved to the Presidents staff for Community Relations in 1979. In addition to serving as Assistant to the President, he was named Secretary of the Corporation in 1984, Secretary of the Board of Trustees in 1991 and provided staff support as Secretary of the 1997 national Presidential Search Committee. He has served five University Presidents as the Universitys chief protocol officer and has helped design and direct most major University events, including commencements, inaugurations, convocations, the Papal visit in 1979 and the annual American Cardinals Dinner since its inception in 1989.
The son of a 1930 CUA graduate, Walter is married to Elaine R. Walter, Ph.D., (CUA 73) long-time Dean of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at Catholic University. They have two children, Vincent III and Deanne, both of whom are alumni of The Catholic University of America.
