DETAILS:

Catholic University will kick off a semester of events related to the Jan. 25 inauguration of President John Garvey with a faculty roundtable on “What Faith Has to Do with Intellectual Life.” Six CUA faculty members, one each from six of the University’s 12 schools, will talk about what faith means for them as teachers, researchers and scholars, and how they are able to bring it to bear in the environment of a Catholic university.

Each panelist will speak for 10 minutes, after which there will be a 30-minute question-and-answer session. The panelists will include:

  • Monsignor Robert S. Sokolowski, Elizabeth Breckenridge Caldwell Professor of Philosophy, who will also serve as the moderator
  • J. Steven Brown, associate professor of mechanical engineering
  • Joseph E. Capizzi, associate professor of theology and religious studies and area director of moral theology/ethics
  • Ann T. Cederna, associate dean for graduate studies and professor for the School of Architecture and Planning
  • Lucia A. Silecchia, professor of law at the Columbus School of Law
  • Ernest Suarez, professor and chair of the Department of English
The roundtable discussion is free and open to the public.

Garvey’s choice of his inaugural year theme was drawn from two sources: his abiding interest in the distinctive character of Catholic higher education and the inspiration that he has drawn from the famous lectures on the idea of a university by Cardinal John Henry Newman, who was beatified in September 2010.

The theme Intellect and Virtue: The Idea of a Catholic University will extend throughout the spring semester with programming devoted to intellect and to virtue.
