CUA Hosts Busy NCAA Tournament Weekend
The Catholic University of America hosted four NCAA Tournament games this weekend featuring the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
On Friday, the University hosted two first-round women’s basketball games in the Raymond A. DuFour Athletic Center. In the first game of the weekend, Widener University defeated FDU-Florham 56-52. Later that night, the Catholic University’s women’s squad defeated Cabrini College 52-44. It was the first NCAA Tournament win in CUA women's basketball history.
In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Catholic University women’s team lost when Widener scored a go-ahead basket with 2.9 seconds remaining in the game to give Widener a 57-56 victory and a spot in the Sweet 16. The loss was the first for CUA at home this season. The team, the winningest in school history, finished the season at 27-2.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the CUA men’s team defeated the College of Staten Island 67-61 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They will face Williams College on Saturday, March 9. The game will either be in Williamstown, Mass., or the nation's capital. Stay tuned to the Department of Athletics website for information about the game.
On Saturday, University President John Garvey wrote a letter to The Washington Post about the newspaper’s lack of coverage of Division III sports despite the high quality student-athletes that play at places like CUA. A March 4 Washington Times story featured the men's basketball team.
WJLA-TV aired a story about both teams on March 1.
