Upcoming Musical Theatre and Opera Events at Catholic University

The Musical Theatre and Vocal Divisions of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America present the following events for the upcoming academic year.

The year will begin with the Jane Pesci-Townsend Excellence in Music Theatre Fund Fall Kick-Off on Sept. 13 at 3:00 p.m. in the School of Music. There, guests will be able to meet the school’s new students and see previews of upcoming productions of The Most Happy Fella and Into the Woods. Tickets are $25 and available at music.cua.edu.

Oct. 23-25, 2015
The Most Happy Fella
From the composer of Guys and Dolls comes this epic musical set in the Napa Valley of 1927. A May-December romance between Tony, an aging Italian vintner, and Rosabella, a young and beautiful waitress from San Francisco, will warm your heart. Book, music, and lyrics are by Frank Loesser.
Performances will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23 and 24, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. at CUA’s Hartke Theater, 3801 Harewood Road. Tickets are $40 for premium seating; $25 for general admission; $15 for seniors and CUA alumni/faculty/staff; and $5 for students and children under 8; and can be purchased online at music.cua.edu.

Nov. 19-22, 2015
The Impresario (Der Schauspieldirektor)
The fall opera will feature the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with German libretto by Gottlieb Stephanie (the younger) sung in English. English translation is by Giovanni Cardelli with additional dialogue by James Hampton. The chamber music arrangement is by Brian Rice.
Performances will take place in Ward Recital Hall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 19 through 21, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission; $10 for seniors and CUA alumni/faculty/staff; and $5 for students and children under 8; and can be purchased online at music.cua.edu.

Feb. 19-27, 2016
Into the Woods
The spring musical takes favorite storybook characters and brings them together for a timeless yet relevant piece and a rare modern classic. Music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim, with a book by James Lapine.
Performances will take place Friday, Feb. 19 and 26, and Saturday, Feb. 20 and 27, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 21 and 28, at 2 p.m. in Ward Recital Hall. Tickets are $20 for general admission; $10 for seniors and CUA alumni/faculty/staff; and $5 for students and children under 8; and can be purchased online at music.cua.edu

March 17-20, 2016
Opera Double Bill: La Serva Padrona and Gianni Schicchi
The Vocal Division and the CUA Symphony Orchestra present two classic operas sung in Italian with English supertitles. La Serva Padrona, which premiered in 1733, has music by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi with libretto by Genaro Antonio Federico. Gianni Schicchi, which premiered in 1918, has music by Giacomo Puccini with libretto by Giovacchino Forzano.
Performances will take place in Hartke Theatre Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 17, 18, and 19, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $40 for premium seating; $25 for general; $15 for seniors and CUA alumni/faculty/staff; and $5 for students and children under 8; and can be purchased online at music.cua.edu.

Anything You Can Do, We Can Do Too!
Join the Vocal and Musical Theatre divisions as they switch roles and celebrate the great traditions in each other’s repertoire. Imagine the golden age of Broadway sung by our outstanding young opera singers and your favorite classical songs and arias given new and vibrant readings by some of the most talented young musical theatre performers in the D.C. area. Performances will include champagne and dessert and will take place in Father O’Connell Hall on Sunday, April 10, at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at music.cua.edu.
